What’s So Bad about Gilead? Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The Handmaid’s Tale is a dystopian novel. In this type of novel, the reader is confronted with a negative vision of a future society, whose characteristics are a result of several trends and affairs that were relevant at the time when the novel was written. A Handmaid’s Tale, written by Margaret Atwood, is an account of the near future, where pollution and radiation has rendered countless women sterile, and the birthrates of North America are dangerously declining. A puritan theocracy now controls the former United States called the Republic of Gilead and Handmaids are recruited to repopulate the state. This social order ultimately offers women more respect and safety than the old, pre-Gilead society offered them. Women in The Republic of Gilead are protected from the evils of the outside world. The evils consist of what men could do to them or what they could do to themselves. Aunt Lydia said to the girls "There is more than one kind of freedom...Freedom to and freedom from. In the days of anarchy, it was freedom to. Now you are being given freedom from. Don't underrate it” (24)......
