Frederick Douglass' Narrative of the Life Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

There are those, even today, who feel that the abolition of slavery was not only detrimental to our country’s economic growth, but that it was in fact, wrong. Fredrick Douglas’s narrative does much to address these issues, and work to further the abolitionist’s movement, and change the minds of those still opposed. Douglass drowns his audience in a torrent of pity and faith, pain and rapture. There are many books out on the subject of slavery and its effects, and what sets Douglass’s narrative above the rest is his ability to connect with the reader, and invite them into his life. He uses personal experiences to relay his gory message. “When I could stand no longer, I fell, and felt as if held down by an immense weight” “He asked me what was the matter. I told him as well as I could, for I scarce had strength to speak. He gave me a savage kick in the side, and told me to get up” (Douglass, 726). This method of relaying cold hard fact, and yet giving the reader an inexplicable window into the life of a slave was very effective in convincing those on the brink of the evil that was s......
