Josh Weißböck 03/05/06 Block E, English 12 Mr. Youds Symbolism and Catcher in the Rye Symbolism is defined in the Merriam-Webster dictionary as “...the art or practice of using symbols especially by investing things with a symbolic meaning as artistic imitation or invention that is a method of revealing or suggesting immaterial, ideal, or otherwise intangible truth or states.” While reading "Catcher In The Rye", J.D. Salinger brings the reader through the mind and thoughts of a confused and frustrated adolescent on his two day trip to New York. After analyzing this piece of best-seller, it is very easy to see that Salinger seems to have made everything symbolize something else; literary analysts could debate that some of these symbols are there by coincidence, however, Salinger is hailed as a literary genius by the general population, so, for these symbols to be there accidentally would be too far fetched for a man of his stature.
