Part 1: General Information on Cancer A) WHAT IS CANCER: Cancer is the general term used for disease that are cause by mutated, uncontrollable cells. The cancer cells usually have abnormally shaped and large nuclei with serrated nuclear membranes. These irregular cells do not have the correct genetic information in the nucleus, which inhibits the cells from performing the necessary functions in a normal way. With cancerous cells, in contrast to other abnormal cells, they are not able to control the cell division, causing it to be random. Other abnormal cells would usually just die. As the cancer cells grow and divide, they form a growth or tumor. The tumors then work to destroy neighbouring tissue. The cells then continue to grow disorganized and uncontrollably. The disorganized growth is termed anaplasia. These cells perform no function to help the body. When normal cells grow and divide, they display contact inhabitation, which inhibits abnormal growth because they stop growing once they make contact with their neighbours.
