To Kill a Mockingbird The qualities of a heroic figure are courage, showing bravery, and unselfishness. This essay will discuss the different aspects of courage, and how it has been shown throughout the novel by different characters in the book. There have been characters who show prejudice, and characters who show injustice, but three characters have shown courage in To Kill a Mockingbird. Courage is when one stands up for what they believe in and not care what other people think. Calpurnia, Mrs. Dubose, and Atticus display courage throughout the novel. Calpurnia is a black woman who takes care of Jem and Scout after Jem and Scouts mother passed away when they were very young. Calpurnia decides to get Jem and Scout dressed up to take the children to the negro church. “I don’t want anybody sayin’ I don’t look after my children.” (118) She displays courage when firstly; she takes Jem and Scout to the “negro” church. She knows that there is another church made for the white people in which Jem and Scout belong. Calpurnia knows that by taking the white children to the “negro” chur......
