Since the act of giving birth to and raising children was the central role of a woman in the nineteenth century, it is unsurprising in works of social realism that both Emma Bovary in Madame Bovary, and Nora Helmer in A Doll’s House are depicted as having borne children. In a time when women were subjugated to passive, maternal roles, it was the responsibility of the wife to properly raise and mould the children into the adults they would become. How they fulfil this role – how they choose to treat their children – is highly indicative of character. Whether it is the selfish and erratic manner of Emma to her infant daughter, or Nora’s frivolous attitude to her offspring, it can be said that these attitudes are extremely helpful in gaining character insights. As maternal attitude may change – particularly in Nora’s case – it can be reflective of character development, or can possibly foreshadow future events.
