A Review of The Peopling of British North America: An Introduction by Bernard Bailyn In order to collect and collate his thoughts on the historical-demographic population study, The Peopling of British North America, Bernard Bailyn produced this 131 page introductory booklet. While it is a microcosm of the voluminous study, it nevertheless clearly and cogently explicates the thesis' premises. Bailyn is concerned with both the experiences of those involved in the �peopling� process, as well as the motivating factors that impelled the process. He posits four propositions on emigration to British North America, focusing on subject matter that had heretofore been only perfunctorily examined. In so doing he refutes a number of time-honored, traditional interpretations of immigration history, most notably Frederick Jackson Turner's. Bailyn's first proposition argues that the participants in the seventeenth and eighteenth century exodus to British North America moved in a familiar manner.
