In Tracey Chevaliers, Girl with a Pearl Earring, Griet is teenage girl who is living in the seventeenth century when class and gender would determine your rights and how you were seen by others. She is not only misused and mistreated by people around her but she is judged by her class and the situation she is in.
Griet’s life was steady until she was appointed to work in Vermeer’s household. She lived in a poor family who treated each other equally and who loved one another. When she moved to the Vermeer household, her eyes were opened up to the realisation that there were different families and unlike her family, people were not treated the same. It was common for girls to be maids in those times and this in its self was a victimisation of gender. Although women were seen as the weaker sex, Griet was asked to perform many difficult and strenuous house tasks, resulting in her hands becoming chapped and scarred.
