The ability to read and write and further, the ability to correctly comprehend has always been greatly valued in my family. I feel that literacy is perhaps one of the most important qualities a person may possess. Many people without this vital quality have helped to shape my perspective. As I continue to grow older, my understanding of the vitality of literacy also continues to grow. My appreciation for literacy developed at a very young age because of the people around me, my family. My mother began reading to me when I was a very young child. Because of this, I started to comprehend speech and even attempt conversation myself. I knew that words were connected somehow to the things I was saying. The first time I �read,� I was simply reciting words that were memorized from a familiar book. To connect certain words to each other, such as those beginning with the same letter or those having similar vowel sounds, I would piece together pictures from magazines and create collages.
