Igor Stravinsky was born in Oranienbaum, Russia Jun 17, 1882. However, he was born in Russia both of Stravinsky�s his parents were Polish. His father, Fyodor Stravinsky was a was a bass singer at the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg. Igor first saw his father perform in Glinka�s opera Ruslan and Ludmila. He was allowed to go back stage after this performance to see Tchaikovsky. Only two weeks after he meet Tchaikovsky he died of cholera. When Igor was nine years old, he started taking piano and harmony lessons. When he was about 18, he met Vladimir, the son of the famous Russian composer Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov. Vladimir and Stravinsky became friends. Through his friend, Igor also met Rimsky-Korsakov and studied orchestration and musical form with him. Rimsky-Korsakov held weekly gatherings at his house where his students played their compositions. Stravinsky learned a lot from his teacher and these gatherings.
