The Cold War is the term used to describe the tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union, where it seemed like there could be a nuclear war at any time. An actual full-scale shooting war never broke out, so they called it a �cold war.� It was �fought� on �economic, philosophic, cultural, social, and political levels (Cold War). Usually the Cold War is considered to be from the end of World War II to either the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 or the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991 (�Cold War�). It �dominated� international relations for 35 years, and the arms race, with the two �superpowers� making more and more nuclear weapons, was a major part of the Cold War (�Nuclear Arms Race�). The atomic bombs that were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, ended World War II and started the Nuclear Age. It was the beginning of a time when people had weapons strong enough to destroy the whole world.
