1899 Newsboys Strike “In 1899, the streets of New York City echoed with the voices of newsies, peddling the papers of the Joseph Pulitzer, William Randolph Hearst, and other newspaper giants of the world.” The newsboys, aka newsies, were a ragged troop of “street rats” and poverty-stricken children forced to work by their parents. Most people have seen or heard of the 1992 Disney musical, “The Newsies”, and are very familiar with its opening line from above. But, what few people know is that the story of the newsies is very real, and just like the movie portrays, took over the streets of New York City in July 1899. At the turn of the 20th Century, times were hard across America, especially in Manhattan. Many parents were forced to send their children out into the city to work just to have food on the table. At that time, there were no labor laws, so this was perfectly legal. A popular job that young boys took was selling newspapers to ongoing businessmen and people on the streets.
