Review of Carlo Levi's Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
Carlo Levi became a political prisoner because of his opposition to fascism. While being held in the small town of Gagliano in Italy, he became somewhat of a hero among the peasants. Carlo was a highly educated man yet unfamiliar with the traditional culture that existed among the peasant farmers. Among these poor, emotionally desolate people, life seemed reluctant to lend a helping hand. While malaria, taxes, and poverty took a toll on the people, they were awarded a breath of relief by the arrival of Carlo. Because the two practicing Dr.’s were less than partial to the plight of the peasants, Carlo was called on by the peasants to see to their medical needs. He brought with him many talents including the ability to paint, play the organ, reading and writing, and a working knowledge of medicine. However, throughout his stay in Gagliano, his efforts toward helping were often undermined by politics and the mayor of the town, Don Luigi.
