Book Review: The influence of Islam in The Kite Runner When first assigned this project I assumed that all the books would be powerfully religious and that faith and beliefs would overpower the story line of many of the novels on the list. After I had read The Kite Runner I found myself surprised at how subtly the author had introduced religion into the novel and how very delicately he made you consider the ideas and that faith presented. All through the novel there are various references to Muslim tradition and beliefs, though it does not hit you until the very end when you close the back cover on the book what an incredibly religious story it was and what an instrumental role Islam had on the story and its characters. Islam is the most commonly practised religion in Afghanistan and when the story first makes note of the faith it is introduced in a very nonchalant way. The author makes reference to the central characters learning to practise their religion in school and discusses how religious holidays are observed throughout the novel.
