Othello's Desdemona Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
Desdemona is one of the most symbolic characters in William Shakespeare’s Othello. We, as readers, see Desdemona as wise, honest, forthright and although naive at times, she plays an important role in Othello. Although the play could not be written without Iago, it also could not be written nearly as well without Desdemona.
Desdemona carries a certain air about her as she enters and leaves scenes – almost as if she is the queen of the stage. In her first speech and appearance in Act I scene iii, Desdemona defends her recent marriage. She shows herself as honest and forthright in front of many powerful men: her husband, the duke, and her father, but she is not ashamed to speak about her desires and actions, even as the only woman in the scene. She shows her courage in her attempt to find the handkerchief in Act III, Scene iv, and also in her insistence about being faithful to her husband in Act V, scene ii. She shows her character as honest, unashamed, and unlike many other women of her time. Her presence in Othello is required for a worthwhile story.
