A Conflict in the Mayor of Casterbridge Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In the Mayor of Casterbridge by Thomas Hardy, the main character Henchard is taunted by a mystery throughout the whole story Henchard is mystified by how to be a good person. He tries countless times to figure out how to be a fine individual, but every attempt he makes ends up terrible. In the beginning of the story, Henchard is shown as a horrible person, mainly because he sells his wife and daughter. He sees his flaw and decides to give up alcohol for 21 years. However, this plan proves to be futile at the end of the book, when he is so depressed and realizing that his 21 years are up, falls off the wagon and drinks himself into a mindless stupor, once again. Initially, Henchard thought this would solve the mystery, but unknowingly sets himself up for tragedy. Some years after making his promise, he meets a man named Donald Farfrae. Farfrae is one of the kindest individuals in the world, thinks Henchard, after Farfrae abandons his plans to come to America, in order to help Henchard with the wheat problem that the whole town is expecting him to fix.
