I n the novel “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” the author, ken Kesey brings about a change in our attitude to the character of Mcmurphy. In this essay I am going to analysis how he does this. At the start of the novel McMurphy is shown to be a dislikeable character. The author gives us an insight into what McMurphy’s background was like. The following quote is where Nurse Ratched introduced McMurphy to the other patients during a patient session. The purpose of this is to show the other patients who include Chief Bromden, Sefelt, Cheswick and Billy Bibbit how much a rouge McMurphy is: “Distinguished Service Cross in Korea for leading an escape from a communist prison camp” This suggests he was a war hero and would have been admired by a lot of people. By contrast he had: “a dishonourable discharge afterwards for insubordination” This tells us that there was two sides to McMurphy. He could be brave and helpful when he wanted but could just as easy be unreliable. This also tells us that mcMurphy had a problem with taking orders and was a violent character as he had: ......
