Do all the characters in “Of Mice and Men” fight an inner loneliness? John Steinbeck’s novella is set in the late 1930s, towards the end of the Great Depression. Times are still rough and jobs still hard to come by. People have to travel around looking for a new start, so they are surrounded by unfamiliar faces... Crooks in my opinion is the loneliest character in the novella. Loneliness has made Crooks a very bitter and inaccessible individual. He is truly not able to leave this situation because of his race. The other men at the ranch do not relate with Crooks unless he is working with them, because he is black. Other than when they are working, the other men shut Crooks out of all of their activities. Crooks is very dejected and not welcome in leisure activities. He has become bitter and known to lash out at people because of the loneliness that he has. Crooks’ emotions are displayed to the reader when he talks to Lennie about having no one to relate to and communicate with. He states: “Maybe you can see now. You got George.
