The Evolution and Appeal of Christianity �For God so loved the world he gave his only begotten son, for whoever shall believe in him shall have eternal life.� (John 3:16) This verse is the foundation and the key to the Christian religion. To be a Christian the first thing you must accept is that there is a son of God and he was Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus was born during the reign of Augustus Caesar, thus beginning the development of Christianity. During the last century B.C.E. the Hellenistic mystery religion had become popular. It promised power and immortality which appealed to the lower ranks of a population which was being divided into economic haves and have-nots. Due to the mystery religion the Jews subdivided into many different factions that held different views of the deliverer. Jesus preached about love and forgiveness. He tried to make the people believe that, that was what God wanted. Even though the Jews were divided thanks to the mystery religion they stood strong and did not fall receptive to Jesus� message.
