Desire for Power, A look at Jack’s importance in Golding’s Lord of the Flies Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

“Man is the only animal whose desire increase as they are fed; the only animal that is never satisfied.” (Henry George). This continues desire is what causes the breakdown of civilization. In William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, Jack Merridew desires control over the boys, which lead to his savage behaviours. From some of Jack’s characteristics, we discover that pig hunting is the most important part of Jack’s life that fulfills his desires. Jack also uses the Beast to bring fear and control among the boys. Jack takes on the personalities of an artisan in the novel, the personalities displays Jack’s desire for power and how these desires brings the degradation of the island society. Jack’s obsession for pig hunting is the major trigger for his digression to ward savagery. From the very beginning, Jack is please with the boy’s present life on the island; he loves the life of pig hinting and no adults, and is quite happy to forget civilization and rescue. Jack become so obsessing with hunting that “[He] had to think for a moment before he could remember what rescue was” (pg54). As h......
