During the development of a county, its nationality is fortified by many important events. These events are the “Defining Moments”. These defining moments are what develop a country in to what it is. Canada is a country that has been shaped by many defining moments, but one of the most important moments for Canada was the victory at the battle for Vimy Ridge during the First World War. The attack of Vimy Ridge took place on April 9th, 1917. But the 4 divisions of the Canadian Corps who joined together to fight the battle actually replaced the British months before the battle, back in mid-winter of 1916. They were put under the command of Lieutenant Sir Julian Byng. Byng was different from other British commanders, he looked at war scientifically; he prepared machines for battles and used them effectively, one example would be that he mounted machine guns on motor bikes and armoured cars.
