REALITY TELEVISION Reality television reflects the current morality of society, whilst having the purpose to be ‘truthful’, provide entertainment and even to create debate. I agree that reality television affects popular culture, whether by reinforcing it or challenging it. This essay aims to discuss in what ways reality television has made an impact on popular culture. BIGGEST LOSER Biggest Loser was originally an American reality television program, however now there is an Australian version as well. Here obese people are made to work hard to either lose weight or leave the program. The context is fitness and health in our society. Biggest Loser stereotypes ‘fat’ people. It does this by testing their self-control, presenting their life-story and past, and by ‘honing in’ on some things that the contestants say. By doing this, over-weight people are represented as having little or no self-control when it comes to fatty foods, their past is sad- maybe they were bullied and have scars because of this.
