In the book, ‘Looking For Alibrandi’, the author Melina Marchetta has constructed diverse multiple representations of teenage youth in society. Marchetta's construction of the characters Josie and Jacob show the different cultural assumptions, attitudes, values and beliefs that underpin youth and their peers. Melina Marchetta challenges aspects of youth discourses through the characters and relationship of Jacob and Josie. The reader is therefore positioned to become aware of the conflict between youth discovering individual identities and the pressures to conform to societal expectations.
