In the first half of this essay I will outline and explain hoe Descartes proposed to defeat scepticism. Then in the last half, I will discus if his attempt to defeat scepticism was successful or not. Descartes was, amongst other things, a noted French scientist who became obsessed with protecting everything he had come up with from the criticism of the sceptics. Descartes decided that we must have some form of certain knowledge if we are to have something to �build� the rest of our knowledge on. The only problem with this was what do we decide is certain knowledge to start with? To do this Descartes adopted the theory of taking on the sceptical view and rejecting anything that seemed to be the least bit doubtful. This involved everything based on sense-experience and everything demonstrated by reason (Philosophy 102, Knowledge and Truth. Pg 23). This was called the Method of Systematic Doubt.
