In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, women were subordinate to their husbands. Although women’s talents in the area of science, general knowledge, and writing were peeking through the surface, many of their husbands would not tolerate that phenomenon. Because of the social injustice, for many women it was a time of hardship; for others, it was a major push towards freedom. In the story of The Yellow Wallpaper, by Carolyn Perkins-Gilman, and The Story of an Hour, by Kate Chopin, both women were controlled by their husbands and the expectations of society, but while in The Yellow Wallpaper the main character escapes through insanity, Mrs. Mallard of The Story of an Hour escapes through unfortunate death.
The narrator in The Yellow Wallpaper is constantly being put down by her husband, a prominent physician who is always right. Although it appears she is suffering from post-partem depression, it is none the less obvious that her madness stems from her relationship with her husband. For three months she is locked up in a room......
