Claude McKay Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Through poems like If We Must Die, The Tropics in New York, America and Spring in New Hampshire, Claude McKay expressed the restraints still cast on African Americans in the early twentieth century. McKay gave a voice to those who did not have one at the time. Over the course of his life, McKay migrated from his homeland of Jamaica to the United States, fought opposition of us strong black consciousness and called his brothers to arms against their oppressors through his poetry. Struggle is the key concept throughout McKay’s writing. That struggle can range from oppression to homesickness to adjusting to laboring. Struggle is a message that rings clear throughout the work of this son of Jamaica. If We Must Die is one of McKay’s strongest battle cries in which he encourages his fellow African Americans to fight back against their oppression. McKay describes their current social status to that of hogs that are confined in a humiliating manner.
