Hawaii, is the hub of United States naval power in the Pacific Ocean. It covers with 22,000 acres on Oahu Island and lies west of downtown Honolulu. Most of the Navy's major commands in the Pacific have headquarters at the base. Pearl Harbor is one of the world's largest and best sheltered naval anchorages. It is formed by two mouths of the Pearl stream. The harbor occupies about 10 sq. miles of navigable water, and has 3 lochs. Its name came from the pearl oysters that once grew in its waters. The Japanese had seized Manchura in 1931, and had been fighting the second SinoJapanese War with China since 1937. During 1941, the long-standing tensions between the Japanes Empire and the United States resulting from these military adventures were rising. The United States and th United Kingdom reacted to Japanes military actions in China by imposing a scrap metal and oil embargo.
