Below is a passage from the second chapter of The Great Gatsby. It is a short introduction about “the valley”, as well as setting the basic tone for Nick’s adventure in meeting Tom Buchanan’s mistress.
The valley of ashes is bounded on one side by a small foul river, and when the drawbridge is up to let barges through, the passengers on waiting trains can stare at the dismal scene for as long as half an hour. There is always a halt there of at least a minute and it was because of this that I first met Tom Buchanan’s mistress… Though I was curious to see her I had no desire to meet her- but I did. (28).
The purpose of this excerpt is to introduce a new character into the story. She goes by the name of Myrtle, and is the mistress of Tom Buchanan who was briefly mentioned in chapter 1. From chapter one, the reader knows ones position in society and character is greatly defined by their place of residence.
