William Golding’s “Lord of the Flies”, written in 1954, provides the readers with a series of events that takes place on a pristine island, where a group of young boys found themselves stranded due to a plane crash. Their adventure eventually turns into a disaster as they attempt to survive their wild and unsupervised surroundings until their rescue. The aspect of conflict between civilization and savagery develops as the story progresses chronologically. At first, the island was occupied by well-cultured English schoolboys. The boys participated in the election of a leader, daily meetings and applied some basic rules in their behavior. The importance of the conch as a symbol of authority, the different groups of the government, the use of fire as a signal for the rescue and the building of shelters are some symbols of civilization that are portrayed in the earlier chapters of the book. The conch replaces the men with the megaphones, who were able to gain obedience from the young boys.
