Heroes: A Comparitive Analysis of the Odyssey Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Most people view heroes as the stereotypically perfect type of people that commit many amazing acts of bravery, constantly have cunning use of the mind and have a major impact on the world. However, Peter Gibbon states in “Heroes for Our Age”, that heroes should not be regarded as such, but “heroes are not perfect” and we should also be able to accept their flaws. In Homer’s The Odyssey, the main character, Odysseus, overcomes several perilous situations which bring several of his endearing and negative characteristics to light. Odysseus has many negative qualities as a man, but at the same time many positive, redeeming qualities as a hero. Odysseus, “raider of cities”, has many opportunities to stand up and set a good example for other characters in the story such as his crewmates and friends. Unfortunately for him, he does not often set the good example. In one instance, Odysseus heartily brags about how he and his crew invaded a city, pillaged and captured some of the local women. The manner in which Odysseus treats women as his property rather than treating them as people......
