The contexts of Crime Fiction Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Genre is, as T. Ryall states, ‘patterns, styles, structures which transcend individual texts and supervise both their construction by composers and reading by audiences.’ These conventions, however, are not prescriptive, as individual composers subvert them, thereby ensuring the continuing value of genre across contexts which shape and are shaped by generic alterations. The fluidity of genre in relation to a text’s context can be explored in the Crime Fiction genre through P.D. James’s The Skull Beneath the Skin, Howard Hawk’s The Big Sleep, J. Deaver’s The Bone Collector and J. Bruckheimer’s CSI: Crime Scene Investigators. The Skull Beneath the Skin employs rules from the Golden Age of Crime Fiction subgenre, pioneered by Agatha Christie, suggesting the intertextual nature of ‘supervising patterns’ of the genre as James utilises an enclosed space. The visual imagery of ‘It stood on the edge of the sea almost as if it had risen from the waves’ bears syntactical similarity to ‘risen from the grave’ suggesting supernatural connotations and a macabre setting for criminal activities. ......
