Francis Macaulay Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Francis Macaulay Francis Macaulay was born February 11, 1862 in Witney, England. He was an only child. Rev. Samuel Macaulay, Francis Macaulay’s father, sent him to a school for the sons of Methodist Ministers. He graduated from this school in 1879. Macaulay then entered St. John’s College; he graduated from Cambridge ranking 8th in his class. After graduating from Cambridge, Macaulay returned to Kingswood School in Bath of 1883. There he studied and taught mathematics for two years. He went London in 1885, to become a teacher at St. Paul’s School. Macaulay taught the top mathematical class. He wrote 14 papers on algebraic geometry and polynomial ideals. In 1915 Macaulay discovered the primary decomposition of an ideal in a polynomial ring, which is the analogue of the decomposition of number into a product of prime powers. Macaulay published The Algebraic Theory of Modular Systems in 1916. He has shown us what a remarkable work this is in the development of modern mathematics.
