The film American Beauty directed by Sam Mendes, tells the story of one man's search for happiness. The film introduces the audience to Lester Burnham; an ordinary- looking married man and father in his forties. Lester who has a mid-life crisis is in search of an escape and a rebirth, and he seeks the slightest possibility of happiness. A mid-life crisis is a time to look back on what you accomplished, whether the person is happy or wants to make a major life change (Allan and Bacon 462). Therefore, the first scene introduces Lester�s transformation process, which provides the effectiveness during the film�s camera movement, lighting, editing, and sound. The first scene where the audience is introduced to Lester's transformation process is when he first spots Angela. Lester and his wife Carolyn decided to go and support Jane at a school basketball game where she is to perform a dance at half time.
