Two Boys Journey for Love
Men have been trying to impress women for ages. This idea goes back to the time of knights and chivalry, all the way up to today’s gentlemen. Similarly, the boys in James Joyce’s “Araby”, and John Updike’s “A&P” are trying to do the same. These two stories tell of two confused adolescent males and their quest to impress the women in their life. In doing this, the two boys take different approaches and undergo different obstacles.
In trying to impress the women in their life, the boys take two different approaches. In the first story, “Araby”, the young boy never talks to his admired until she talks to him. When she finally does speak to him he becomes confused and doesn’t know exactly what is going on. They discuss Araby and the boy agrees to bring her something when he goes. This becomes the boy’s main purpose in life. The story says, “At night in my bedroom and by day in the classroom her image came between me and the page I strove to read” (Joyce 296). He knows exactly what he needs to do and he thinks of nothing else but that.
