Initiation stories are a kind of short story in which a character usually a child or a young person learns a significant, usually life-changing truth about the universe, society, people, himself or herself. Initiations between boys and girls into adulthood can be very different. In the short story �By the Creek� by Barry Yourgrau it describes when a boy becomes a man. It describes who they become. The story is about a boy that quickly becomes a man. He becomes the man of his father, simply by taking his head. I think that Yourgrau is saying that all boys eventually always become their fathers. As if they don�t have a choice, it will just happen. There is also the mother�s reaction involved; in the story the mother did not want the boy to have his fathers head on. She told him to put it back and then told him to get away from her, as if she was so shocked to see her son grow up so fast.
