D.H. Lawrence is a master story teller in the ways he describes his settings and the actions going on in them. But when it comes to characterization, Lawrence falls short sometimes, but is this on purpose. One would think Lawrence is perfectly capable of creating a well characterized figure in his stories based solely on his ability to create wonderful environments in which the stories are told. Sometimes however, Lawrence will skimp on character details especially inner workings of the mind of his main characters. A great example of this can be seen in The Horse Dealer’s Daughter.
In The Horse Dealer’s Daughter, D.H. Lawrence does not give much shape to his character of Mabel. We learn much more about her brother Joe and her father than we do either Mabel or her other two brothers. When we first meet Mabel the reader has learned that the family’s horse business has been dissolved and all the members are scattering away from what has been their home.
