Oleanna In the play Oleanna, by David Mamet, there are two opposing views on the American education system. The first is shown through the character of John, a professor at the college. Although he is a professor, through the play he constantly is questioning the system of which he is a part of. He thinks that it is greatly flawed because it does not teach the students but instead teaches them to regurgitate information back to their teachers. The opposing view is provided through Carol. She is a student at the college and is a firm believer in the education that she is receiving. The play is a series of conflicts between the two characters and their opposing views. This serves as the background of the entire play. Although John is a teacher at the college he makes it apparent very quickly that he does not approve of the educational system. He thinks that the system of learning that is set up should be altered because what it is right now is not effective.
