Desire for Acceptance Pat Mora�s poem �Immigrants� is a poem that confronts the social pressures put on immigrants to conform to the typical American image. Every person strives to be accepted into a certain culture and this is no different in the United States. This poem takes that desire and puts it through the view of an immigrant parent who hopes their children will be able to be accepted into the American lifestyle. I think the parents who feel like this are not only concerned for their children, but also concerned for themselves; hoping their family will be able to conform to what America sees a family should be. Fear seems to be the driving force behind this poem. This poem is a great example of the way many immigrant minds think when living in America, but this is not a healthy way to face that concern or raise your child.
