Every language, every culture, every country has benefited from the contributions made by the Sumerians. The Sumerians were the first civilizations who came from a land called Mesopotamia. This land is located between the Euphrates and Tigris Rivers, thus the name Mesopotamia means �land between the rivers�. The Sumerians came about around 3500 B.C. This is also where the first city-states, which are small countries consisting of a city and the surrounding territories that depended on it, appeared. These city-states worshipped their own gods at a temple architecture called a ziggurat which was located in the center of each city-state. Along with these ziggurats came priests. Their system of religion is just one of the contributions the Sumerians made to civilization today. Another contribution was their ability to cultivate agriculture and domesticate animals.
