America, The Un-melted Pot Mark Goldblatt’s essay “We’re Hard-Wired to Stereotype” is just what the title would lead us to believe it is about. How in today’s society all kinds of situations, personal experiences and media reports effect our reactions when encountered with people of certain ethnic backgrounds. His argument is effective in the way that he takes an everyday occurrence, that most people have experienced, and does not make us feel guilty for having those feelings. He leads us to believe that even though it is unfair for the people of Black, Arab or Hispanic descent to be stereotyped; it is not unjust or unfounded. The tone of his essay is one of resonating sadness and resignation of our society today. His personal experience at the airport and the assumption that people are familiar with the terrorist attacks against the United States on September 11, 2001, makes us feel justified in the reaction we have when encountered with Blacks, Arabs and Hispanics in certain environments.
