Villains and victims are essential characters in Pat Barker's intriguing, disturbing and often gripping tale of the past of a young man impinging on his present life. Border Crossing opens up the whole discomforting and compelling field of inquiry into behaviour, motivation, criminal acts, choice and moral responsibility, and where children may fit within these definitions and boundaries. And, by extension, the text examines definitions of blame and attribution and questions about the possibility of deep change and `’redemption''. The text unfolds in which a young man Danny, who is living under the new identity of Ian Wilkinson because of the murder Danny committed when he was 10, wants desperately to reconnect with Tom and to work with him to understand more about what happened, and perhaps come to terms with it, in the form of just talking but not actually psychotherapy. During his time in prison Danny was never given a real opportunity to rehabilitate through therapy or treatment. Thirteen years later Danny attempts suicide by jumping into the river he had the knowledge of Tom ......
