The views of Simone de Beauvoire and those that the Existentialist belief are founded upon have many common traits, and are sometimes one in the same. Her work The Second Sex, based on her religious values, includes various examples of existentialism. “One wonders if women still exist, if they will always exist, whether or not it is desirable that they should, what place they occupy in this world, what their place should be.” This quote is the main premise for the rest of her work, and it shows different ways in which her thoughts were similar to those of an existentialist. The first example of existentialist thought is in her quote “...to them, are merely the human beings arbitrarily designated to the word woman.”, as she tries to answer the questions of whether or not the word woman has any specific content. This demonstrates existentialism through agreement with the belief that we are nothing but what we make of ourselves. The word women was used as an identity for the creation of woman.
