Abstract This article discusses the definition of conformity and obedience. It uses experiments from Solomon Asch and Stanley Milgram to illustrate how obedience and conformity affect social behavior. It also explains some of the reasons humans are so eager to be obedient. Conformity is defined as a change in behavior, belief, or opinion so that the change is more congruent, or agreeable, with an influential individual or group. Among these influences are group pressure, guilt, and authority (Kiesler & Kiesler, 1969). Most people conform to society in one way or another. It is human nature to want to belong to the same group as your peers. An excellent example of a place where you would see different types of social groups conforming to each other is in school. If you look at any school today it is easy to differentiate people into different types of groups. You may see one peer group emulating the hip hop style of dress and listening to their style of music. Another group may be into skateboarding and also dress the same style as their peer group.
