It's a very 21st-century workplace issue-perhaps the issue of most concern to today's lawyers, managers, and employees. It's got legal and ethical implications, but it's also got good solid business ramifications. It's privacy-and defining it is remarkably difficult these days, thanks to the Internet. Perhaps that's why the issue's arisen in the first place, and why so many companies have found themselves embroiled in the controversy. I believe the line between privacy and an employer’s right to know has become blurred in many workplaces today and the employer is crossing way over the line.
According to a survey conducted in early 2000 by the American Management Association, (AMA) an average of 64% of employees now enjoy use of email from office locations, and 48% have the ability to connect to the World Wide Web.
