Gwen Harwood’s poems are a reflection of their context, which includes religion, music and literature. They are mature and deeply personal evoking a sense of identity and incorporating common themes such as the loss of innocence and the inevitable passage of time. The poems, Father And Child (I & II) and The Violets both share similar themes and use techniques typical of Harwood’s poetry. These poems generate various readings such as Postmodernist, Feminist and Psychoanalytical, which highlight the values of the context to which they belong. Father and child presents a childhood experience that results in the loss of childhood innocence. Through the child’s disobedience of her father she gains knowledge and an insight into death “I leaned my head upon my fathers arm and wept, owl-blind in early sun for what I had begun”. Visual imagery such as the angelic imagery to present the persona at the start of the poem “dream of a child obedient, angel mild” is contrasted to the gory image used to present the images of pain and suffering after the persona kills the owl, “hobbled in its own......
