Love is generally thought of as something honest, pure, and heart-warming. But what Winterson shows us throughout the story of The Passion is that, not only can love be those things, but can also be just the opposite. She brings to light the fact that (through her fiction) love can also be related to dark emotions and deceitful actions can be derived from the same emotion. Though they sound different, both love and passion are inter-related, meaning that to be in love with someone, or even an ideal or belief, is to not only think of yourself and what you get out of it, but what you put into it is critical. The only difference with passion is that it is closer to more primal urges with selfish, earth bound aspects that hold a potential to achieve a more spiritual meaning, closer to its� counterpart. This is foreshadowed with Napoleons� gluttonous affection for his food, his �passion for chicken� (Page 1), that could be linked to primal love or maybe a form of primitive lust.
