Analysis Project: Georges Seurat “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte” 1884 The painting that I have chosen to analyze is “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte” by Georges Seurat (1859-1891). Seurat was a leader in a movement called neo-impressionist in the late 19th century. Neo-impressionism was a late-19th century art movement led by Georges Seurat and Paul Signac, who exhibited their early work in 1884 at the exhibition of the Société des Artistes Indépendants in Paris. French art critic Félix Fénéon coined the term in 1887. The movement was closely linked to impressionism but was more formal and strict in composition. Pointillism, originally called "divisionism" by its creators, was employed as a fundamental technique of the movement. Due to the similarity and common background of pointillism and neo-impressionism, both styles could be referred to solely as pointillism.
