Mukherjee explores the promise of American-style individualism and female liberation alongside the burden of old world responsibilities and cultural ties signaling female oppression. V.S. Naipaul�s �One out of Many� deals with the struggles faced by an average Indian male immigrant, Santosh. Both Jasmine and Santosh have different reasons for coming to America and both characters will face obstacles that ultimately change the reason for their initial journey into the west.
