The Green Revolution : A Limited Success During the 1940�s to the late 1970�s many major events occurred in India. One of the most horrendous events that occurred was the Bengal Famine of 1943. Over three million people died from starvation, malnutrition, and related illnesses during this time in India. Exporting of food, appropriation of arable land, and price inflation were all causes of famine in British-ruled India. In 1947, when the British decided to leave, India gained its independence. India was still left traumatized after it gained Independence, as it was not ready to deal with its agricultural problem by itself. In the 1960s, India was desperate for a breakthrough as food crises were endemic. Food reserves were nil and marginal agricultural increases were only through bringing more land area under cultivation and not through increases in productivity. India was just meeting its deficit with food imports, and total food production hung around 50 million tons, hardly enough to support it�s multiplying population.
