“’You start tomorrow as their maid. If you do well, you will be paid eight stuivers a day. You will live with them.’ I pressed my lips together. ‘Don’t look at me like that, Griet,’ my mother said. ‘We have to, now that your father has lost his trade.’” This quote takes place in a pivotal part of the novel. Griet is sixteen and is growing up in Holland. Her father was once a tile painter, but when he was in an accident with the kiln, he lost his eyes and his trade. Now Griet must help her poor family by working for the famous painter, Vermeer and his family, as a maid. This quote is the conversation Griet has with her mother after she just finds out that she will be living and working for Vermeer. As it is expressed in the quote, Griet does not want to have to leave her family. She has never done so and did not think the day would come so soon. From this quote, you can tell that the point of view is from Griet. The author expresses how Griet feels about the situation, not by words, but by a facial expressing that she uses throughout the novel. You get this imager......
